Camper Vans, also known as Recreational Vehicles in the United States, are vans that have been modified in such a manner that they can offer both transport and accommodation facilities all in one. These vehicles are hugely popular with families and travelers who like to camp, hike, or take up outdoor activities for fun. In the United States, camper vans are bigger than their counterparts in Europe and the rest of the world generally because of the size of roads and highways in the United States, which are much bigger and broader than those in other countries.
There are several types of camper vans available in the market; those with an extendable or pop-up roof that can be raised to give more space during camping, those that have a fixed roof as part of the vehicle or those with a uniquely fitted roof that is custom-made to cater for the specific needs of the a camper vanner, a term commonly used to refer to frequent users of camper vans. There are companies that dedicate themselves to producing specially built camper vans from the manufacturing plant, while there are those people who simply convert huge vehicles, especially pick-ups, into camper vans and use them to satisfy their needs. The first company that specifically manufactured camper vans was Volkswagen. They had three specifically built vans, i.e. split windscreen, the bay framed windscreen, and the brick shaped van. Other manufacturers followed suit after that, with Ford, Fiat, Bedford, and Toyota releasing similar vehicles. Some of the items that can be found inside a camper van are a refrigerator, a gas/electric grill, a microwave, a gas/electric powered water heater, beds which could sometimes be used as seats during the day, batteries or external power hook-up ports, a portable toilet with removable tank for disposal of waste, a shower, a television, some of which are hooked to an external aerial or satellite dish, a water tank, a wastewater tank for wash water, a bike rack and many other features.
As mentioned above, camper vanners are generally people that prefer an outdoor adventure with their families and/or friends. Outdoor trips can be tricky when it comes to the issue of car specifications. If a user is looking for a good outdoor camper van for rough and muddy terrain then having a large 4 by 4 van would be more appropriate than a 2 wheel drive van, which would be more appropriate for flat and possibly tarmac/gravel roads instead. One of the main issues in a Recreational Vehicle is the source of power. Most of them get their power either from the car battery or from specially fitted power batteries whose main function is to power some of the electric devices in the vehicle. These batteries are charged by the cars electrical system, which gets is power from the vehicles engine when it is running. These batteries, however, are not usually sufficient enough to power all the electrical items in the car; hence there are some vans that have ports where the users can source electricity from an external power source, such as a socket or generator.
